CNPq Announces New MSI Institutes in Brazil

The Commission on Program Selection and Administration for the Millennium Science Institutes met in Brasilia at the National Council on Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in July and September 2005 to approve the latest round of MSI institutes in Brazil. This followed the evaluation and selection of submissions received in response to the Request for Proposals of January 2005. More.  

MSI Presented at Vietnam-U.S. Science and Technology Days in Hanoi

A seminar on "Promoting the Effectiveness and Linkage between Research and Education through the Millennium Science Initiative" was held on November 15, 2005 in Hanoi. The seminar was a featured event at Vietnam-U.S. Science and Technology Days, held in celebration of the tenth anniversary of normalization of relations and the fifth anniversary of S&T cooperation between the two countries. Speakers included Tran Ngoc Ca of NISTPASS, Le Thanh Binh of MOST, Claudio Bunster of Centro de Estudios Científicos, Chile (an MSI Institute), and Arlen Hastings of SIG. Dr. Bui Manh Hai, the Vice Minister of Science and Technology, gave opening remarks. The seminar was part of an ongoing effort to introduce MSI to the scientific and government communities in Vietnam and to seek their input into its design. More.
 

New MSI Institute Named in Chile

Following an evaluation process, including review by an international Program Committee, the Board of Directors of the Chile MSI has selected a new MSI Institute.  The Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB), led by Principal Investigator Dr. Mary Kalin, had previously been an MSI Nucleus.  

SIG and UNDP to Develop Component of Global Science Corps (GSC)
September 27, 2005
SIG has received a grant from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to develop a component of the Global Science Corps (GSC) with special emphasis on émigré scientists and South-South collaboration. As part of this program, SIG and UNDP will host a workshop in Africa in early 2006 to generate interest, assess need, and begin to design the specifics of the program, including selection criteria for and responsibilities of host institutions and fellows. Vietnam Delegation Visits MSI Centers in Chile and Brazil

A delegation from Vietnam traveled to South America in August 2005 to visit MSIs in Brazil and Chile and to learn more about designing and implementing similar programs in their home country. More.  


World Bank to Give Uganda $20 Million Science Boost

SIG Team Visits Vietnam

A team of SIG board and staff members visited Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi at the invitation of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Vietnam Education Foundation to help develop recommendations for the implementation of MSI centers of excellence.

8 MSI Nuclei Approved in Chile
January 31, 2005
In January 2005, the Program Committee met to review proposals for MSI Nuclei in Chile.  Eight MSI nuclei were approved by the Board of Directors of the Chile MSI.  These represent renewal of 5 existing Nuclei and 3 new Nuclei.
